Alabama Flag
The History of Alabama state flag is not that much old. As Alabama joined the Union in 1819, Alabamans adopted their own flag but it was not until the Alabama state withdrew formally from the Union in 1861. This withdrawal or Secession Convention held on 11th of January 1861. This convention was really distressing for Alabama citizens that made them decided to withdraw formally from Union of United States and adopted their own flag. The first official Alabama's flag was designed by a Montgomery women group that was flag of “Secession Convention”. This flag was also referred as Republic of Alabama flag. Unfortunately this Alabama state flag was damaged in severe storm just after one month it was adopted on 10th of February 1861 and was moved to the Governor's office. After that it was never flown again over Alabama State. At this time when Alabamans did not have their own flag, they decided to rally under the flags of the Confederate States of America. Then one of two Confederate National Flags started flying over the Alabama state for four years from 4th March 1861 till April 1865. The United State flag was raised over the Alabama State after the War and kept flying until 1891. According to history of the Alabama flag Alabamans decided to design their own flag of unique style.
After four years on 16th February 1895 the Alabama State’s Legislature authorizes the "crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white" in the Acts of Alabama as its official flag. It was designated that the bars of crimson cross should not be less than 6 inches broad and should extend diagonally on the flag side by side. These are the facts about the Alabama state flag and from 112 years the Alabama state flag is flying so proudly over the Alabama soil.
