Alaska Flag
The history of Alaska flag is not that much old. The state adopted the current flag of Alaska in 1959 for official state use. A contest was sponsored for Alaska by the American Legion Department in which grade seven to twelve children had to take part. The reason for this contest is to get a design of a flag which represent the future state of Alaska. Rules of this contest spread throughout the Alaska in January, 1927. There were two stages of this competition. First stage was the competition held at the local level in which the local town judges would decide the best ten designs and send to Juneau where the final competition would take place.
From all the towns total 142 designs were sent to Juneau. In all these designs a number of ideas were presented which was refused by Flag Committee of Juneau. One third of the designs were based on the seal of territorial and many other designs were based on the polar bear. The winner of the contest was Aleut student of seventh grade, a 13 year old boy who a Native American named John Bell (Bennie) Benson from a village Chignik, who designed the Alaska state flag. He also won a 1000 dollar scholarship and a watch for designing the Alaska's flag in the flag designing contest.
Alaska came in the union of the America very late, as Alaska is the 49th number country which gained the position of statehood after so many states. The other name of Alaska is Last Frontier.
