Antigua Flag

The national flag of Antigua is not only referred as the Antigua flag. It is also referred as the Antigua and Bermuda flag. Antigua and Bermuda got independence as a one country. The name of the country is not simply Antigua; it is named as Antigua and Bermuda. So this is the reason the flag name is referred as the National Antigua Bermuda flag.

The history of the Antigua Bermuda flag is not so long. Before the independence of Antigua and Bermuda, this region was under the control of Britain, since 1632, it was a British colony. The flag of Antigua was adopted so long before the independence of Antigua and Bermuda in 12th february1967. It was just used for the region identification and it was also different from the current flag of Antigua and Bermuda. But when the Antigua Bermuda got independence in 1981 from the British rule, this flag become a national flag of Antigua and Bermuda. There was not that much variations in the Antigua Bermuda flag in the era of Britain rule because it was ruled under only one party before independence.

The interesting thing about the Antigua and Bermuda flag is that, it was not designed by any ruler or founder of Antigua Bermuda; it was designed by a school teacher. For the designing of a national flag of Antigua a competition was held in 1966. Round about 600 people made their designs but a school teacher, Mr. Reginald Samuel, came just 40 minutes before the competition and designed the flag in half and hour. He won the competition and got first prize of $500. Reginald Samuel was a teacher of a designing sculpture and painting.

The description of the Antigua and Bermuda flag is: the flag is made in the proportion of 2:3. On the whole five colors are used in the flag of Antigua and Bermuda RED, WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW, and BLUE. The base of the flag seems like a two vertical rectangles. The base of the flag is red upon which an upside down pyramid emblem is drawn. The pyramid contains four colors, at the top of the pyramid the black color is used as a background. On the black color a semi shape sun is drawn with 7 pointed corners filled with yellow color. After the black portion a blur horizontal strip is drawn and after the blue strip another pyramid is drawn in upside down position filled with white color. The sun on the black portion seems that it is dawning from the back of the blue strip.

The meaning of the colors used on the flag of Antigua and Bermuda are: the yellow colored sun drawn on the Antiguan flag with seven pints depict the dawn of a new and revolutionary age in the country. The red color has two meaning according to different people; one meaning is that it is representing the power and vigor of the country, while some says that it is the blood of the ancestors who were slaved. The blue color on the flag of Antigua and Bermuda depict the expectation and trust of the country people. The black color depicts the African region, as in much African country. The yellow, blue and white color under the partial seven pointed sun also represent the sun, sea and sand; which is the most powerful attraction for the tourists in Antigua and Bermuda.
