Barbados Flag

The history of the Barbados flag is not so long and also not painted with the blood of freedom fighter. Before the independence of Barbados, it was under the rule of British monarchy, since 1627 when British had established colony in this island. When the people of Barbados gained independence from the British monarchy in 1966, then at that time, the Barbados national flag was adopted. The Barbados national flag was first adopted on 30th November 1966 and flag of Barbados was approved by the coat of arms on 21st December 1966. In Barbados there is a constitutional kingdom under the rule of Queen Elizabeth 11.

Barbados flag origin is not very old. It was just made when Barbados gained independence from British. Flag of Barbados was not designed by any leader or politicians, a contest was held for the designing of the Barbados flag when Barbados gained independence. The flag of Barbados was designed by an art teacher named Grantley Prescod, he won the contest and the design made by Grantley Prescod was approved as the Barbados national flag. The Barbados is a Portuguese term, which means the bearded. This name was chosen because the island of Barbados is covered with the bearded big trees.

There is a rule regarding the Barbados national flag hoisting that; after 6:00 PM, the flag of Barbados should not be flown on any building or car externally but it is allowed to hoist the Barbados flag within the building after 6:00 PM.

The description of the Barbados flag is very simple because there were not many variations made in the Barbados flag. The flag of Barbados is made in the proportion of 2:3. The flag of Barbados is made in a tri-band pattern. Barbados flag has three colors: Ultramarine, Yellow and Black. There are three vertical strips on the Barbados flag. Starting from the left side: first ultramarine color vertical strip is drawn then a yellow color vertical strip and then again ultramarine color vertical strip is drawn. All the three strips are drawn in equal proportion. In the middle, yellow color vertical strip an emblem of broken trident head is drawn. The trident head on the Barbados flag is of black color.

The meaning of the Barbados flag colors are based on the Barbados Island. There are two conceptions about the two ultramarine strips. While the yellow color have only one meaning. The yellow or gold color depicts the sand of the Barbados Island. While about the ultramarine color strips, some writers say that the ultramarine color vertical strips depict the sea or ocean around the golden sand of Barbados Island. While other writers say that; the left ultramarine color vertical strips on the flag of Barbados depict the sky of the Barbados and the right ultramarine color vertical strips depict the sea of the Barbados and both the sky and the sea are encircling the golden sand of the Barbados Island.

The black emblem of trident on the middle yellow color vertical strips on the Barbados flag depicts the independence from the British monarchy. While three ends of the trident on the flag of Barbados depict the Barbados democracy three principles: government of Barbados, government for Barbados and government of Barbados people.
