Belgium Flag
The history of Belgium flag is very old but not that much controversial. Some changes had been occurred in the arrangement of the color strips. Before the independence of Belgium since 1789 to 1830, Belgium was under the rule of Netherlands. In that era the flag used for the identification of the Belgium region was the same as the current Belgium flag. The difference was that the colored strips were drawn in horizontal pattern and the color arrangement was Red, Black, and Yellow. Later on when the Belgium gained independence from the Netherlands in 1980, then in that era national flag of Belgium was made. The flag of the Belgium had experienced some variations on the previous flag. On 26 august 1830 first Belgium flag was stitched by the Mrs. Marie Abts. Instead of Red, Black and yellow color arrangement, the color arrangement was changed to Red, Yellow and Black but the direction of the strips was still horizontal. This Belgium flag with the horizontal pattern was used for one year.
Later on, on 15th September 1831, the arrangement and the direction of the color strips on the Belgium flag were changed by the navy department. The new arrangement was: the strips on the flag of Belgium were drawn in vertical direction. The color arrangement was: black color strip was on the Belgium flag at the hoist part, the Red color strip on the flag of Belgium was on the fly and the Yellow color strip was in the middle of the Black and Red color strip. This new arrangement was approved on 12th October 1831 by the interior department. This arrangement of the flag of Belgium is still in use by the Belgium.

The meaning of the Belgium flag is also not so controversial; Belgium flag colors are basically taken from the Brabant coat of arms. Brabant was a province in Netherlands before the Belgium independence. The ensign of the coat of arms of the Brabant was: a yellow colored lion was drawn on the black background; the tongue and nails of the lion were of red color. So the color combination was taken from this old Belgium ensign. While the vertical strips on the Belgium flag is taken from the flag of France.
There are many other Belgium flags except the national Belgium flag. The other flags of Belgium are: civil Belgium flag, navel flag of Belgium, state flag of Belgium. All of these flags of Belgium are used countrywide, in many occasions and for official purposes along with the national Belgium flag.
