Belize Flag

The history of the Belize flag is not so long. Flag of Belize has not experienced that much variations, as it was under the rule of one system that is United Kingdom for so long time. Since 1964 Belize was a self governing country, but under the United Kingdom monarchy, and was named British Honduras. Before the independence from Britain’s, the Belize flag was exactly the same as the current Belize national flag except the two red color horizontal strips. The flag of Belize without red color horizontal strips was first adopted on 2nd February 1950. Later on, when British Honduras start struggling for the independent country, then at that time, Red color horizontal strips were added on the flag of Belize. The symbol of coat of arms was added to the flag Belize on 28th January 1907, before the Belize independence, at that time the name of Belize was British Honduras. When Belize gained independence officially from the Britain, then at that time on 21st September 1981, the additional red color strips Belize flag become the Belize national flag.

The description of Belize flag is little bit long, but not controversial. The flag of Belize is made in the proportion of 2:3. Belize flag is a unique flag of the world, in the context of colors, as there are twelve colors on the flag of Belize. The background of the Belize flag is of royal blue color. There are two horizontal strips drawn at the upper side of the Belize flag and also at lower side of the Belize flag. At the center of the Belize flag there is white circular disc, which contains many things. Firstly the white circular disc is surrounded by 50 olive leaves, seems like an olive leaves ring. Then in the middle of the white circular disk there is emblem of coat of arms. The emblem of coat of arms is divided into three portions. The upper right side of the coat of arms holds an ax and a saw with yellow background. The upper left side of the coat of arms has an oar and a sledgehammer with white background. The lower portion of the coat of arms a sailing ship is drawn with a blue background and a red flag ensign is also shown on the sailing ship which depicts the British ensign. At the right side of the coat of arms there is man standing with dark brown color and holding an oar. At the left side of the coat of arms there is a mulatto man with skin body color holding an ax. At the upper side of the coat of arms a green color tree is drawn. While at the bottom of the coat of arms a Belize’s motto is drawn that is “Sub umbra Floreo”.

The meaning of the Belize flag is very simple. The 50 olives leaves on the Belize flag depict the era of 1950, before the Belize independence, when the current Belize and old British Honduras was started struggling for freedom from British monarchy. The motto on the flag of Belize depicts the reliance from the British and the general meaning of the Belize flag motto is “I Flourish in the Shadow”.
