Before this the flag was used only on land to represent the national Greece flag and a substitute flag was used while on sea. The striped flag without the cross was used at sea as the national flag of Greece until the approval of current Greek flags, which contains both the stripes and cross was adopted in the year 1978. The design of the Greek flag is not changed since the formation of the Greece flag, but the colours of the Greece flag had experiences some variations regarding the shades of the blue colour, which was changed for a number of times. The description of the Greek flag is simple. The Greece flag full size is made in the proportion of 2:3. The Greek flag consists of nine stripes. The colours of these strips are blue and white. These strips are based on the nine syllables for the Greek phrase “Eleutheria H Thanatos”. This phrase means Freedom or Death. This motto encouraged the heart of the oppressed Greeks, it created passionate emotions and inspired them to fight and gain their freedom and independence after 400 years of slavery. The square cross that is placed on the upper left-side corner of Greece flags occupies one fourth of the total area and designates Greek Orthodoxy. It expresses the high opinion and the dedication the Greek people have for the Greek Orthodox Church and signifies the vital role of Christianity in the fight for independence against the Ottomans. The Greek Orthodox Church helped the enslaved Greeks preserve their cultural characteristics. The Greek flag wallpaper can be downloaded from the internet from various sites.

The colour of Greece national flag is blue and white. These colours were chosen by the Greek people to express themselves. The colors of Greek flag blue and white represent the blue of the Greek sea and sky combined with whiteness of Greek waves and clouds. The blue was seen as a colour of protection and the white characterizes the purity of the country's struggle for independence. The line pattern was chosen because of the resemblance with the wavy sea that surrounds the shores of Greece. The Greek flag meaning is the cross symbolises Greek Orthodoxy and the nine stripes are one for each of the syllables of the phrase “Freedom or Death”. The interchange of blue and white colours makes the waving Greek Flag on a windy day to resemble the Aegean Pelagos (sea).
