Greenland Flag

The history of the Greenland flag adoption is not very old but the history behind the design of the flag of Greenland has experienced disappointments from the people of the Greenland. Most of the people of the Greenland were not happy from the design of the Greenland's flag. In 1973, the initial proposal for the design of national Greenland flag came, most of the people of the country and also many officials recommended that the green, white and blue color flag would be suitable for the national flag of Greenland.

People were inspired from the proposal criteria and thus many people presented their designs. So in 1974, 11 new proposals were published in the newspapers, ten out of 11 designs that were published in the newspaper comprised of cross of Scandinavian country. Most of the people were not happy with the design which contains Scandinavian cross, as the Greenland is the Danish dependency, but since 1979 Greenland is sovereign country. Yet a vote was held with the help of newspaper and then came the result that the Denmark flag was the most favorite flag of the people. In 1980 a flag design competition was held by the government and round about 555 designs were submitted.

But the officials of government were not satisfied by the all 555 designs. So more designs were demanded from the artists by the government officials. At last the current flag of Greenland was selected by vote from 14 to 11.

The flag of Greenland is also named with the ERFALASORPUT which means our flag. The other name of the Greenland's flag is AAPPALAAROQ which means the red. These terminologies are also used for the flag of Denmark. In the Christian language it is said that; "the colors used on the Greenland flags are same as on the Denmark flag so we can refer them as the AAPPALAARTOQ flag, The Red". The original adoption of the Greenland flag occurred on 21st June 1985.

The description of the Greenland flag is simple. The flag is made in the proportion of 2:3. There are two horizontal strips on the flag of Greenland. The uppermost strip of the Greenland flag is of white color. The bottom strip is of red color on the flag. Both of the strips on the flag are of equal size. At the left side of the flag at the quite center of the flag a circle is drawn. The upper half of the circle is of red color, while the lower half of the circle is of white color, and is equally divided into two parts.
