Guatemala Flag

The history of the Guatemala flag is not very old regarding the adoption of the flag of Guatemala. The history of the Guatemala country itself is very old, dated back at the start of the 18th century. The Guatemala flag colors had strong association with the Central America’s united provinces old federation flag. The former flag of Guatemala used before the era of 1871 comprises of horizontal strips instead of current vertical strips on Guatemalan flag. The strips direction was transformed from horizontal to vertical direction in 1871. The Guatemala became an independent state on 15th September 1821, after taking freedom from the monarchy of the Spain.

There are three vertical strips on the flag. The hoist side vertical strip and the flown side strip are of blue color while the central strip is of white color. In detail the first vertical strip from hoist side is of blue color. The second vertical strip on the flag is of white color, while the third and last flown side strip is again of blue color. The Guatemala coat of arms is drawn at the center of the white color middle strip. The coat of arms holds light blue background color. On the blue field, the two rifles and two swords of golden color are drawn on the shield and both of these are tied with the branches of the laurel. The sentence “Libertad 15 de septiembre de 1821" is also written on the coat of arms with golden color. Above the sentence the Quetzal bird is also drawn.

The Quetzal bird on the flag depicts the freedom and the sovereignty of the people of Guatemala. The sentence written on the coat of arms represents the date of independence of Guatemala from Spain.
