The National flag of Italy was officially adopted as the National flag to represent the country on the 19th of June in the year 1946. In the year 1796, the French controlled Lombardy region of North Italy and used this Italian tri colored flag to represent them selves and then again, in 1797, Italian tri colored flag was used by Napoleon Bonaparte's Cisalpine Republic. The same flag was then reintroduced in the year 1868 by King of Sardinia. He incorporated his coat of arms on the flag and used it to represent all the areas of the country that were under his controlled. When the Italian Kingdom was established in the year 1861 then the Italian flag with the monogram of the royal coat of arms on it was adopted as a symbol to show the Italian Unity. However again in the year 1946 when the Monarchy was abolished the coat of arms was also removed from the National flag of Italy.

The design and the coloration of the National flag of Italy are very unique yet very simple. The National flag of Italy is based on a rectangular design which has a tri color scheme and those colors are divided amongst three stripes that are of equal width. There is also another very famous interpretation of the design and coloration of the National flag of Italy which is: the French flag is said to be the chief influence in the design of the National flag of Italy and it is believed that Napoleon replaced the blue color in the original French flag and turned it into green as he liked that color and chose that for the National flag of Italy.
