Jamaica Flag

Jamaica adopted its current flag as its national flag on the 6th of August and the year for that happening was 1962. After the country gained independence from the West Indies Federation it was able to adopt its own national flag. It was the year 1958 when the country Jamaica had gained its independence from the clutches of Britain and that was the time when Jamaicans had joined the federation of the West Indies. The original design of the flag was proposed initially, was featuring horizontal strips with the same colors that are used currently on the national flag of Jamaica. But that design of the flag was rejected because of resemblance with the Tanganyika flag.

The design and the coloration used to make up the National Flag of Jamaica are very unique and are at the same time interesting and simple. The proportions of the National Flag of Jamaica are 1:2 respectively. The theme of this flag has been put together keeping in mind the traditions and ways of the people of Jamaica. Each color signifies the struggle and difficulty that the people went through to attain freedom. The three colors used are yellow, green and black respectively and these are scattered along the National Flag of Jamaica making an interesting design. The design is that which consists of a yellow colored cross that is actually in the shape of a big X and each corner is touching each edge of the flag base points. Situated towards the left and right side of the cross are two triangular shapes. The two shapes are both in the color black and similar to those two shapes on either side there are two triangular shapes on the top and bottom as well. Those two shapes are of the color green respectively. There are also visible on the pictures of the Jamaican Flag and there are also large Jamaican flag stickers available which are images of the Jamaican flag. Also the Jamaica flag face painting can be seen on the face of most of people at some sports festival or on any official event.

The meanings and the significance of the colors used in the National Flag of Jamaica are very unique and they are interesting and very easy to explain. The National Flag of Jamaica is one which is made in such a way that the motto becomes clear the motto which is as follows: “Hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth”. The green color that is used in the top section and the bottom section of the National Flag of Jamaica represents the green land. The black on either side is used to symbolize the presence and occurrence of hard times and hard ships. And the yellow X shaped cross that cut through the entire flag is the sign of hope that the sun will rise which could also mean that a new day and a new hope will come. The green also represents hope and the agricultural nature of the land. The cross is there that also represents the presence of the country’s mineral wealth. And the black is there to show that Jamaica has over come a lot of hard ships to reach its current independent state.
