Lebanon Flag

The history of the Lebanon national flag is not very old, only dates back in the 19th century. The first Lebanese Flag was raised in Bashamoun on 21st November 1943 at exactly 11:20 pm. Lebanon flag was made by France in 1920 and the flag is based on the French tricolor. The cedar tree was positioned in the white of the French flag. The Lebanese Flag was originally colored Blue, white and Red with a cedar tree in the white part. However when Lebanon pronounced its independence finally the men who declared independence drew a sketch of the flag. In it they got rid of the blue color and made the horizontal strips.

The description of the Lebanon flags is simple. The Lebanon flag is made in the proportion of 2:3. The Flag of Lebanon comprises of three colored stripes such as: 1st red, then a white one and then a red one again. A cedar tree is used in the center of the white strip. In the 18th century it is said that the Maronites used a white flag with a cedar tree in the center, in the First World War the nationalists of Lebanon added the two red strips to symbolize two things. Firstly the martyr’s blood that was shed, and secondly, red and white were the colors of the Lebanese Legion which the French Formed in 1916. The design is believed to be taken from the French design. The Lebanese flag consist of 3 strips the white strip is the same size as both red strips when put together. The tip and the root of the cedar tree shown in the white strip both stretch towards the edge of the red areas.

The meaning of the Lebanon national flag is simple and not controversial. An official explanation of what the colors mean was given as: in the forests of Lebanon white is snow; where the Cedar trees grow that is on snowy mountains. It is also a symbol of purity. The red is the color which represents the people who died in the struggle for independence against colonizers, Ottomans and the French. The white strip stands for peace today, and the red bands symbolize the pure blood that was shed by millions of people, innocent people in their fight for liberation and independence. As for the cedar tree in the middle well it is said to still stand for immortality. When special festive occasions take place such as the Lebanese Independence Day, Lebanese Flags horizontal flag which are available in different sizes in the market are raised with great enthusiasm typically along light poles and telephone poles all over the country. It is still the same color but it is vertical and has the cedar still touching the red strips on both sides. Some flag manufacturers have made the cedar tree green and brown, but Lebanon's constitution states that the tree should be green only. But there is still a confusion regarding the brown color which has some historical significance where the flag coloring is concerned.
