Lesotho Flag

The history of the Lesotho flag dates back in the 19th century. The official adoption took place on the day that was after the military coup and the adoption of the National Flag of Lesotho led to the previous flag being replaced. The previous flag was adopted when Lesotho gained its independence from Britain in the year 1966 and the exact date for that happening was 4th of October. In 1966 when the Lesotho became an independent state, then at that time the need of a national flag was felt. So the national flag of Lesotho was approved by the officials of Lesotho on 19th January 1987. The country of Lesotho changed its name from Basutoland to Lesotho in the year 1966 as well and that happened well after the country had fought and gained its independence from the clutches of the British rule in the country. Before it was known as Lesotho it was called Basutoland.

Some important facts about the flag is; the old flag of Lesotho that has so much resemblance with the dismissed national BNP party, this party had led the country for very long time. But after rebellion that flag was not used again in the country.

The design of the Lesotho flag is very simple but the unique one. The proportions of the National Flag of Lesotho are 2:3 respectively. The National Flag of Lesotho is one that is as mentioned above divided into three stripes and those stripes are diagonally shaped on the flag design. There is one stripe that is diagonal and that is of a greater width that stripe technically forms the top most stripe of the flag. The second stripe is of a slightly thinner width and is in the middle technically the last stripe as well is diagonal and is slightly thicker than the second stripe but thinner in width as compared to the first stripe on the National Flag of Lesotho. The three stripes are colored in three different colors the first stripe is of the color white, the second of the color blue and the last stripe is of the color green. A monogram is present on the top left side of the first stripes that is of the color white on the National Flag of Lesotho. The monogram is of the color light brown. The monogram is a picture of a traditional shield and is a part of the country’s national coat of arms. The meaning as to the design and the coloration is also very unique and simple. The white color is used to represent peace the blue color is used to represent rain and water and the color green is used to symbolize the fertility of the land. The shield monogram is used to show the willingness of the people to defend the country’s independence. The new flag of Lesotho has the features of old flag of Lesotho. The country coat of arms is used as a symbol on the flag. Khotso-pula-nala is the coat of arms, and meaning of coat of arms is peace rain plenty. All the features of the coat of arms are used on the flag.
