New Zealand Flag

The official flag of New Zealand was finally adopted on the 12th of June and the year was 1902 but the actual introduction of the flag of New Zealand was done to the people when New Zealand fought for its freedom and finally was victorious and gained its independence from Britain that was on the 26th of September and the year was 1907. Until the year 1865, New Zealand used the British Union Jack as its flag. In the year 1867 the new design for the Flag of New Zealand was introduced and that flag had the letters NZ on it. The letters stood for New Zealand and the new design was approved and used for about two years, then the letters were removed and the letters were replaced by the four, five pointed stars that are even now present in the design and that happened in the year 1869.

The description of the flag of New Zealand is very simple and is therefore very easy to explain if anyone wants to ask as to what the colors of the flag of New Zealand the answer would be a very simple one and that would be, that they are only three colors that are blue, white and the base of the flag is a dark blue color and the top left side corner has the Union Jack of the British made on it and towards the far right side of the flag are the four, five pointed stars that are positioned on the blue base in the formation of what is known as the southern cross. The picture of the union jack is present on the flag of New Zealand to represent the British and New Zealand’s British Commonwealth heritage. The sky and the sea are both represented by the blue color in the base of the New Zealand flag, the four stars that are present on the flag of New Zealand are there to symbolize the constellation that is the ‘southern cross’ as the southern cross is considered to be a very prominent constellation in the southern hemisphere and is hence a way to help in specifying New Zealand’s geographical location in comparison with the rest of the world. The stars are also there as a representation for the stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.

An interesting factor to view and keep in mind about the flag of New Zealand is that the flag has been tried to be changed its design that has been taking place since the year 1973 but as it is the law in the country of New Zealand which states that 65 per cent of the majority vote would be needed in order to bring about any change in the flag of New Zealand. However as most of the people present there and who are by origin the people of New Zealand have strongly shown opposition towards any change to be brought about in the Flag of New Zealand design. The proportions and dimensions of the New Zealand Flag are also very unique it is no doubt a triangular shaped flag like the many flags of the world but hold the dimensions in the following ratios that is 1:2 respectively.
