Norway Flag

The Norwegian Flag was officially adopted on the 17th of July in the year 1821. It is therefore, considered to be a very old flag in the history of the world and flags used by other countries to represent themselves. The origins of the design of the Norway flag are based and highly influenced by the design of the Danish Flag. As the Danish Flag is comprised of a blue cross placed within a white cross. Till the middle of the 15th century it is seen in history that Norway was ruled and controlled by Denmark and that rule stayed till the year 1814. That was the year when Norway joined in a union with Sweden and that union lasted till the year 1905.

The Norwegian Flag used to have an emblem on it that stayed from the year 1844 till the year 1898 and that emblem was solely there for the representation of the Norway and Sweden Union. It was in the year 1898 that the government re-introduced the Norwegian Flag and that flag did not contain the same emblem which was the union symbol. In the year 1905 in a referendum voting, the results were led to the breaking up of union between Norway and Sweden, as was desired by the people.

The description of the Flag of Norway is one which is very unique but it is also simple and easy to explain. If any one wants to inquire regarding the colors of the Flag of Norway the answer would be simple; as the Norwegian Flag was based on three colors only i.e. Blue, Red and White. The background of the Flag of Norway is red in color, situated on that background is a Scandinavian Cross. The cross is blue in color and it has a white outline. The positioning of the cross is very unique on the Norwegian Flag. The vertical stripe is not placed in the center as it usually is. Rather it is based on the left hand side of the flag. The significance of the colors used in the Norwegian Flag is also very unique because it is mainly influenced by the American and British Flags. The main colors, red, blue and white are considered world wide to be those colors which represent liberty and independence. The cross and these colors that are used in the Flag of Norway are very common in most of the Scandinavian Flags and this represent Norway’s connection with other Scandinavian Countries.

It would be interesting to note here that regarding the Norwegian Flag its original idea was given in the year 1821 by a Danish member of parliament Mr. Fredric Meltzer. Then during a session of the parliament, this idea was given and the idea of adding a blue cross to the Danish Flag finally became a reality. Discussions regarding this new Danish flag could be used to represent Norway and its past association with Denmark, and also its union with Scandinavian Countries was then the center of attention in parliament. At this point it could be rightfully assumed that the red and white colors were influenced from the Danish flag and the blue from the Swedish Flag. This combination of red, white and blue colors and their arrangement on the flag was very appealing to the parliament because it revealed the colors of liberty and independence. Similar as they do in the flags of France, United States of America and the flag of the Netherlands.
