Sri Lanka Flag

In the year 1978 on 7th of September, the country Sri Lanka adopted its current flag as its national flag. The country gained its independence from the rule of British on 4th February 1948. The old name of Sri Lanka under the British monarchy was Ceylon, but it was changed to Sri Lanka in 1972. The people of Sri Lanka used this flag and The National flag of Sri Lanka for many centuries and The National flag of Sri Lanka is known as the lion flag all over the world. This lion flag was used in the year 1948 and its design was changed and it under went a slight modification in the year 1951. The modification consisted of the addition of the vertical stripes to represent the minority of religious groups of the country. The leaves were added to The National flag of Sri Lanka when the country changed its name, and the leaves also saw a relative change and modification in the year 1978. The flag is said to be in actuality two different flags joint together to form one. The lion is the original flag and the stripes on the left side are of another flag.

The description of The National flag of Sri Lanka is a very unique design and has its own unique coloration and significance. The National flag of Sri Lanka as mentioned above is one which consists of base which is of the color yellow/orange on the far right side taking most of the area of The National flag of Sri Lanka. It is a rectangular shaped patch which is of a crimson color. The patch contains the monogram of a lion which is holding a sword that is held in an upright position. The lion is called a lion passant and is of the color yellow. In each corner of the crimson patch there is a monogram of four yellow colored pipul leaves.

On the left side of The National flag of Sri Lanka there are present two horizontally shaped stripes that are equal is size and length. The stripes are of the colors green and orange. This area on the flag is surrounded by the original border which is of yellow/orange color. The significance of the colors used in The National flag of Sri Lanka is of very interesting and unique meanings and those are as follows. The Green stripe represents the minority religious group that is in Sri Lanka such as Muslims. The orange stripe consequently represents the Hindu population. The yellow color used in The National flag of Sri Lanka is there to represent the fact of Buddhism and the crimson color is used to represent the long life. The sword in the lions paw is used to represent authority and the lion itself is used to represent the people of Sri Lanka. The pipul leaves present on The National flag of Sri Lanka are there on each corner represent love, compassion, sympathy and equality. The proportions of the flag are 1:2 respectively.

In the flag the right side has a rectangular shaped area which is of a crimson color and that has the monogram of a lion which is in the color yellow and has in its hand a sword that it is holding in an upright position.
