Thailand Flag

The official history of the flag of the country Thailand was adopted on the 28th of September in the year 1917. Therefore it is considered to be a relatively older flag as compared to the flags that are used by other countries to represent themselves all around the world. It is observed through history that Thailand was called Siam for a long time. To be more exact and accurate it was called Siam from the middle part of the 19th century and that stayed until the year 1939. It is also seen that since the middle part of the 19th century till the year 1916 the country used a red based flag with the monogram of a white colored Elephant. This flags design was then replaced in the year 1916 and the replacement flag contained stripes which were horizontally placed and were red and white in color. That flag was again modified in the year 1917 and the center red colored stripe was replaced with the color blue.

The description of the first Flag of Thailand is very unique yet simple and thus it is easy to explain. If anyone wants to inquire what the size and colors of The Flag of Thailand are the answer to that question would be: simple design and only three colors. The Flag of Thailand consists of five horizontally shaped stripes the size of the top most and the bottom most stripe are the same, the second and fourth stripe on the flag are also of equal size however, in the center there is a fifth stripe which is double as compared to the size of the other four. The top stripe on The Flag of Thailand is of the color red. The second stripe is white the fourth stripe is white and the bottom most again is red. Situated in the center of these four stripes is the fifth stripe which is of blue color. Significance of the colors used in Thai national flag are very interesting, the red color used in the firs t and last stripe represents the blood spilt and loss of life which was a result of their fight for independence. The white color used in the second and fourth stripe is there to represent purity and also to represent the country’s main religion which is Buddhism. The Thai Monarchy is represented by the color blue and Thailand’s allies of World War I which were Britain, France, United States and Russia, are also honored by the use of the color blue as they all have red, white and blue colored flags.

An interesting fact to note regarding The Flag of Thailand is that the flag is known by many names; however, it is known as “Triaranga” and is also commonly known as “Triarong”. Both these words when literally translated mean triple colors or tri color. It is seen through history that even at the time that Thailand known as and formerly called Siam, which was during the year 1939, and even when Thailand was said to had allied with Japan that was during World War II, the design and coloration of The Flag of Thailand remained the same. The proportions which are used to divide the flag into its various dimensions are those which follow the following ratio 2:3 respectively and thus making The Flag of Thailand a rectangular flag.
