Vatican Flag

The official national Flag of Vatican City was introduced in the year 1825 however, it is seen that the flag was not officially adopted until the 8th of June in the year 1929. This happened just after the Vatican City gained its independence from Italy, which was on the 11th of February in the year 1929. It is a known fact and also an interesting one that the Vatican City state is the smallest independent country in the world. It is the smallest both in area as well as population. Known to be the home of the Pope, the Vatican City state is known to form the territory of the Holy See, and this territory is considered to be the central authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Flag of Vatican City is divided into two vertical halves one half is white and the other is yellow. Situated in the center of the white half is a monogram of Crossed Keys of St. Peter and the Papal Miter. The significance of the design of Flag of the Vatican City State is very symbolic. It is a known fact that the colors yellow and white have been used to represent the metals Gold and Silver

The description of the Vatican City flag colors is very unique yet one that is very interesting. The answer to the question as to what the colors of the flag of the Vatican City are is a very simple one since the flag consists of only two colors which are yellow and white. The flag as mentioned earlier is divided into two vertical halves. The left side strip is colored yellow while the right side strip is white. It is seen that situated in the center of the white strip there is a monogram. The monogram shows the Crossed Keys of St. Peter and the Papal Miter. The significance of the design of Flag of the Vatican City State is very symbolic. It is a known fact that the colors yellow and white have been used to represent the metals Gold and Silver. This has been seen in Heraldry and these two metals are never placed side by side, however, when seen in the Flag of the Vatican City State, a special exception has been made and both Gold and Silver have been placed together as they are used in the keys of St. Peter and therefore, are represented here.

This flag whenever seen demands respect from the public since it is the flag of the city where the Holy See is present, and therefore, is respected by the Roman Catholic’s worldwide. As seen in most countries when their flags are torn and dilapidated in state, they should be burnt in a simple ceremony; the same is the case with Flag of the Vatican City State. However, when the flag of this particular city has reached a stage where it can no longer be flown, it should be buried and not burnt since it holds the crossed keys of St. Peter.

Although the Flag of the Vatican City State has been printed in many different shapes and sizes the official chosen proportions to divide its dimensions have been 1:1. Keeping these ratios in mind it is seen that the Flag of the Vatican City State is not of rectangular shape making it the second flag in the world which is square.
